Dear Felipe, This is an interesting topic. Looking at your research so far what strikes me as lacking is contextual research on the history of racism and race relations in the United States. You’ll need a good knowledge of the history and legacy of slavery, the Jim Crow era and the US civil rights movement to fully do this topic justice. We’ve got some good resources available in the Library to help with this. I’d recommend you watch the documentary series The civil rights movement (available through Kanopy, our academic streaming video service), as well as reading these suggested chapters in The white racial frame centuries of racial framing and counter-framing: ‘Introduction:The white racial frame’, ‘Extending the white frame the eighteenth century to the twentieth century’ and ‘The contemporary white racial frame’. If you’ve got access to Netflix, The 13th is a great documentary on the legacy of slavery, anti-black persecution and the US prison system, while the DVD I am not your Negro [videorecording] collects the work and thoughts of eminent black intellectual James Baldwin on race relations in the United States. Going back to animation, you may find the following books useful: The animation studies reader (available from Farnham) – chapter by Chris Pallant on ‘Race, resistance and violence in cartoons’ Animating culture : Hollywood cartoons from the sound era ‘examines Hollywood animation and social control, studio strategies - sexuality, law and competition; cartoon comment on race, gender and class’. Finally, by way of contrast to Disney, you might want to look into animated the series The Boondocks, which was an Adult Swim programme about African American teenagers adapted from a series of comics by Aaron McGruder.
