What If? Metropolis OGR

  1. Some of your thumbnails are interesting in this same way, but I suggest you need to look at the real word references underpinning the objects in Bosch's paintings in terms of their structures, so you can begin to combine them in a suitably 'Bosch-style' - so if was thinking structurally about Bosch's more architectural forms, I'd be looking at references like this and isolated key elements and combining them perhaps as silhouettes or overlays in an attempt to find some new interesting forms (and stop drawing in biro maybe because I don't think it's helping very much).

(the venus-fly trap image is helpful in this respect!)

So the other element is the symbolism - so think about colour symbolism, so how something as simple as the choice of a colour of a building might signal something about it in terms of Bosch's moral universe of the seven deadly sins or whatever...

The other approach is to look at animal/plant symbolism as it relates to sins etc and use that as a guide as to identifying shapes/structures from the animal/plant kingdom by which to go about designing your various structures:

So - short version - you need a more 'ideas-driven/design-led' approach to your artist: you need to think about his methodology (hybridisation of animal, mineral, vegetable structures to create structures) and also about the relationship between visual imagery and religious symbolism, because Bosch's paintings represent 'alphabets of symbols' - everything he includes is about an idea as it relates to human behaviour and what people think about it. It's time to roll up your sleeves and actually get excited about this artist (he's a gift to the concept artist and designer!) and do the work that will ensure your final result is as interesting and as resolved as possible.

I want to see a change-up in terms of your method of generating thumbnails (no more biro!), I want to see much more evidence that you're researching and applying that research, and I want your presentation to improve - all practical, do-able, useful things!

Filipe - try and have more fun please - and dial-up your work-rate, or you're never going to complete this project to the standard we're expecting. Go for it!

  3. Filipe... update your blog please - there's nothing on here and that's a problem. We've all been very clear about the way sharing your work relates to your reputation as a professional member of this creative community and I don't want to have to 'wag my finger' at you, when this is a very basic expectation of undergraduates - make a change please before you risk losing marks because of the 'way' you're developing your work.
